The holidays are just around the corner. Below are some tips for holiday safety along with some new tips from the Irvine Police Department’s Crime Prevention Unit on how to celebrate safely.

  • • Shopping Tips:
    • o Many will be shopping online, so be aware of sales and emails that seem too good to be true. Access retailers through a search engine rather than a link to make your purchases.
    • o If shopping in person, stay alert and be aware of your surroundings.
    • o Shop during daylight hours whenever possible. If you must shop at night, go with a friend or family member.
    • o Avoid overloading yourself with packages or bags. It is important to have clear visibility and freedom of motion to avoid mishaps.
    • o Avoid carrying large amounts of cash.
    • o Park in well-lit places, lock your car, close the windows, and do not leave valuables in plain view.
    • o Unpack your vehicle as soon as you get home; do not leave shopping bags or luggage in your car.
    • • Packages:
    • o Bring your packages inside as soon as they are delivered.
    • o Consider having items delivered to your place of business or to the nearest post office if you are not home during the day.
    • • At home:
    • o Be careful when solicitors come to your door.
    • o Do not open your door to uninvited guests.
    • o Respond verbally so they know you are home.
    • o Large displays of holiday gifts should not be visible through the windows and doors of your home.
    • • Travelling:
    • o Leave a spare key with a trusted friend or relative.
    • o Have someone familiar with your home check on your property regularly.
    • o Lock all your doors and windows.
    • o Place lights on automatic timers or sensors.
    • o Consider video monitoring systems.
    • o Refrain from posting on social media that you are travelling until you return home.
    • o Only take with you what you need.
    • o Stop mail and deliveries while you are away.
    • • After the Holidays:
    • o Don't advertise expensive toys, electronics, or other gifts received by the boxes left for garbage collections or on social media.
    • o Add new items to your home inventory. Take photos or video of all items of value in your home and list each item's make, model, serial number and other identifying information.
    • o Engrave new items to help identify them in the event they are lost or stolen.
